Seventeen.

“This is the first game of the season, and I’m expecting it to be a win. We need to prove that we’re the best academy amongst them all,” Levi said in the changing room. “We have a good team this year, so I’m expecting good things.”

I swore Levi looked purposely at me when he said it. I was anxious, yet excited. I loved playing Flicker in our training sessions, but this would be my first real match.

I didn’t even know how many academies were around until I saw the league table in our last training session, and it surprised me. Were there really that many magicals around the world?

I was playing in attack alongside Miles, George and James, however Miles and I were the only two who were down as all-rounders, so we could use whatever element we saw fit. The rest of the team is given an element to specialise in although if a situation arises where a different element is required, then they could use it. Levi preferred us to be all organised and know what our objectives and individual aims are.

“Miles, Roxy, we’re relying on you two to get us through this match.” Levi walked over to us as everyone was leaving to enter the pitch.

“We’ll win, Levi,” Miles grinned and turned to face me. “Let’s go get them, Rox.” I followed him out, but the wink from Levi as I passed him didn’t go unnoticed.

As we stepped out onto the pitch, roars of cheers sounded from all directions. I hadn’t expected there to be so many people and it looked as if most of the academy was here to support us, let alone the opposing teams’ supporters. There was even outsiders which I assumed was family members of some all magic students.

“What academy is this team again?” I asked Miles as I glanced around the stands.

“Brockendown Academy. They’re from America.”

I didn’t know what to say because I was still in awe over how big the magical community really was.

I joined Lorrie’s side as we jogged up the pitch to warm up. I was glad she was on the team alongside me and I know that Miles wanted her here if just to help me out with my linking, although he didn’t know that when he picked her, because she was good. We were the only two first-years to make the team which was a good indicator of our power.

“Take your places,” Levi shouted as he was refereeing for the match.

I gave Lorrie an anxious smile as we took our places. Miles and I were starting in the front centre with George and James on our wings. Lorrie and the other three were situated behind us to ensure defence and assist with attacking.

“You ready, Rox?” Miles whispered loud enough for only me to hear although I was sure that Levi overheard judging by the weird look that he gave me.

“I think so,” I whispered back, although my eye drifted towards Levi. I wasn’t sure why, but there was something about him which drew my attention.
